Found out a day or two ago the comics artist Tony DeZuniga passed away. Most people associate him with Jonah Hex, the character he co-created and drew for a heck of a long time…but me, as a child of the 70’s and comics geek for most of my life, first remember seeing his art, or at least being aware that “this was this art in that style by that artist” via the Black Orchid back feature in the pages of The Phantom Stranger. Above is a page from that story, in issue #31. It’s also a coincidence that it was the first issue of that title I had ever picked up and read as well, launching a lifelong fandom for the enigmatic Stranger.
Anyway, I did remember the back feature’s lead from seeing her on the cover of three issues of Adventure Comics which had come out previously, but for some reason I wasn’t moved to check them out…DeZuniga drew all three, if memory serves, though the covers were by Bob Oksner. I guess sales weren’t great, because after those three, they plucked the Orchid from Adventure and burned off the rest of the inventory in the back of PS. DeZuniga drew the first one; Nestor Redondo did the last two. I thought the character was kinda cool, interesting looking…but the whole mystery superwoman angle kinda lost me, as I realized I was in no mood to go along and (presumably, though I don’t think writer Sheldon Mayer ever really meant to reveal it) find out how she did the things she did.
After that, I would see DeZuniga’s art in Hex (which I didn’t buy then, actually) and about a hundred thousand short mystery stories in House of Mystery/Secrets and many other of DC’s supernatural line. Frankly, though any idiot could see he was an accomplished craftsman and consummate professional artist, I just didn’t care for his style, which I often found grubby-looking, scratchily inked, and stiff. That said, his work was definitely a small part of my formative years, and thus becomes yet another of the titans of my youth that are now gone, never to return.
May he rest in peace.

In case you were wondering what Daenerys Targaryen would look like as a Disney princess.
Pete Rozelle writes down the very first draft choice in Atlanta Falcons history- Tommy Nobis! Also, not coincidentally, one of the greatest players in team history and someone who should be in the effing NFL Hall of Fame. Oh, did I mention he was a favorite player of young David Jones, in his pre-and early teen years?
